Apply for a learner's licence
In order to qualify to apply for a driver’s licence, you must have obtained your learner’s licence. This licence qualifies you to operate a vehicle with a licensed driver present.
Rules and regulations
A learner's licence qualifies you to operate a vehicle with a licensed driver present. You can either apply for a code 2 licence, which will allow you to drive light vehicles, or a code 3 licence, which allows you to drive heavy vehicles. You can also apply for a code 1 licence, which allows you to drive a motorcycle; you do not need a licensed driver present with you once you have your code 1 learner's licence.
You can get a learner's licence for a motorcycle over 125 CC, a car, a minibus, a small goods vehicle or for a larger vehicle if you are older than 17 years of age. You can get a learner's licence for a 50 CC to 125 CC motorcycle if you are 16 years or older.
How to apply
Before you can write your learner’s test, you will have to book an appointment.
Step 1: Visit your local
driver's licence testing centre.
Step 2: There you can submit your application, which will include the Application for Learner’s Licence form, which will be provided by the testing centre.
Your application must include:
- Acceptable ID Document
- 2 recent identical ID sized photographs
- The appropriate application fee
- Proof of address
Step 3: Once you have submitted your full application and paid the fee, you will be given an appointment date which is generated by the E-natis System (computerised) to write your test. All the necessary information will be available on your appointment sheet, which is given to you to confirm your appointment.
You can only cancel this date if you are:
- sick (you will need to provide a medical certificate)
- attending a funeral (you will need to provide a death certificate)
- writing exams (you will have to provide a timetable)
Your payment will not be refunded if you cancel your booking. Please ensure that you alert the testing centre you were going to write your test at that you will not be making your appointment, in order to prevent a backlog.
How to apply if you cannot read or write
You can apply to do your learner's licence without having to read or write, all your answers will be spoken - this is known as an Oral Learners Licence.
Step 1: You will need a sworn affidavit from SAPS to apply. The Affidavit must state one of the following reasons for the oral application:
- You cannot read or write
- You have a learning disability
- You have Dyslexia
Step 2: go to your nearest
DLTC with the following:
- The sworn affidavit
- Acceptable identification (ID, passport)
- Two recent, identical photographs (per application)
- Proof of disability from a health practitioner/learning institution
Once the provincial supervisor receives the letter of permission from Provincial Administration, you will be contacted and told what to do next.
Taking the test
Step 1: On the day of your test, please remember to arrive at your appointment on time.
You will need to bring:
- Acceptable ID Document
- Your receipt, which gives the details of your appointment
- The appropriate issuing fee
Step 2: When you have completed and passed your test, you will need to pay R33 to have the learner’s licence issued to you.
